Dockmaster

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Dockmaster to join the Facilities Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.

This position will perform mechanical construction, repair, maintenance, and installation involving a wide variety of shipboard and shore based mechanical and scientific systems and equipment. This position also works closely with Marine Operations to assist in implementing orderly turn-around of research vessels between cruises; maintains order and cleanliness of pier and staging areas.

• Work activities in power transmission by hydraulic, mechanical or other means.
• Working with mechanic's hand and power tools, lathe, drill press, power saws, hydraulic press, hydraulic shear, welding equipment and tools, sheet metal tools, heavy equipment (fork lifts, crane cars, and overhead cranes), ships' machinery (cranes, engines, pumps, and generators), and small boats.
• Assists Chief Scientists, Port Office, Facilities, Services and other personnel in scheduling movements of material to and from the pier. Maintains control of vehicles on the pier. Calls for assistance from Shop Supervisors or Distribution Manager as necessary to provide clean-up services and/or repairs to the pier.
• Performs oversight and inspections on Iselin dock and associated equipment and activities in compliance with spill prevention control and countermeasures plan (SPCC)
• May be asked to serve as the primary operator of specialized cable winding equipment.  This responsibility may require occasional travel.
• Operation of all Institution Forklifts.
• Responsible for operating stationary or mobile cranes to lift, move, position, and reposition loads under general supervision.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• As deemed necessary by supervisor

• High school diploma, vocational school or equivalent trade training.
• Experience in the Marine industry.
• Certified as an Operator of Hoisting Equipment by the State of Massachusetts. Valid Driver’s License CDL (Class A) with appropriate inclusion such as the Hazardous Materials Endorsement.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

• Should be mechanically inclined and suited to do accurate work that requires concentration and physical effort.
• Should have basic mathematical aptitude and understand basic concepts for reading drawings.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 lbs independently, 15 times per day; carry 10-25 lbs, 20 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, stooping, and climbing ladders/stools. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, with others, and independently. Will be exposed to excessive cold, heat and humidity, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards, severe weather conditions, grease and oils, and prolonged work hours. Physical duties are subject to change.
