  • Job Summary

    Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research/Engineering Technician (Part-Time Helper, Lab Assistant I/II, or Engineering Assistant I- III) to join the Geology & Geophysics Department. This is a temporary, casual, non-exempt position, and is not eligible for benefits.

     

    Part-time Helper

    • Packing & unpacking containers
    • Organizing files
    • Organizing mechanical and electrical supplies
    • General clean-up including washing laboratory glassware
    • Data Entry

    Lab Assistant I/II

    • Light mechanical/electrical assembly required
    • Organizing lab work areas
    • May assist in collection and preparation of samples or data
    • May be using CAD
    • May perform other project specific duties and complete other general task-oriented functions
    • as required.

    Engineering Assistant I/II/III

    • Assists in assembly, maintenance, and repair of equipment with instruction and advice
    • Assists/conducts functional testing of instrumentation following/adapting procedures for setup
    • and operation of standard test equipment; may troubleshoot and correct minor
    • malfunctions
    • Selects and operates standard test equipment, records test data, and performs routine
    • analyses
    • Fabricates and constructs complex components of instrumentation requiring care and
    • accuracy, seeking advice as necessary
    • Uses CAD systems to prepare schematics, drawings, or parts lists

    Essential Functions

    NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • As deemed necessary by supervisor

    Education & Experience

    Part-time Helper Level-

    • Working towards a High School Diploma.
    • High School lab experience/STEM courses are helpful.

    Lab Assistant I/II Level-

    • High School Diploma or equivalent with some relevant lab experience
    • CAD familiarity is desired.

    Engineering Assistant I Level-

    • High School Diploma
    • One-year mechanical/electrical experience or technical school training.
    • CAD familiarity is desired.

    Engineering Assistant II Level-

    • One-two years progress toward an engineering degree.
    • CAD familiarity is desired.

    Engineering Assistant III Level-

    • Two-three years progress toward an engineering degree.
    • CAD familiarity is desired.

    *All Levels- Basic computer skills and a willingness to take on a variety of tasks are required for all positions.

    *Position level will be based on the selected candidates' education and experience.

     

    Physical Requirements

    Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to occasional/prolonged standing/walking, repetitive motion (using the computer & general office equipment), and use of hands for basic grasping and basic/fine manipulation. Visual requirements to include depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors. Communication requirements include ability to hear and talk to others, on the phone and in-person; working around and with others. This position may be exposed to dust or other irritants and grease & oils. Physical duties are subject to change.
