  • Job Summary

    Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Market Research Associate to join the Technology Transfer Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.

     

    The Market Research Associate will assist in technology licensing efforts by advising, through thorough research and creativity, on technology marketing strategy. This role will be responsible for evaluating new tech disclosures & utilizing creativity in exploring avenues for product development. This position will be capable of being highly creative - presenting well-researched and organized data in defense of markets and products to pursue. The Market Research Associate will collaborate with Patent Agent and Technology Transfer team in creating informed patent strategy and justification. The Market Research Associate may also at times, support in the active marketing of technologies through various channels including but not limited to press and publications, web & digital, as well as event support and management.

    Essential Functions

    • Conduct market research to identify potential licensees and support in initiating industry outreach
    • Assist in research and networking for potential licensees and collaborators
    • Attend disclosures to gather relevant market data and insights
    • Conduct market research for selected technologies. Recommend markets and segments to pursue as well as value proposition.
    • Create well-researched reports and presentations justifying technology IP strategy
    • Manage Prioritization Database
    • Responsible for (in collaboration with the Technology Transfer Manager) assistance in the writing of marketing collateral for web and print media circulation
      • Provide support in producing WHOI Tech Transfer Annual Report, email newsletters, web content, and technology presentations
      • Provide support in writing technology marketing articles for, and manages relationships with Trade Publications
      • Prepare and update Inventor/PI training materials on intellectual property and corporate interactions
      • Coordinate direct mailing campaigns to WHOI Inventors, mentors and other OTT customers
    • Assist in coordinating OTT outreach and marketing events (e.g. Pitchathon, Startup Weekends)
    • Administer and manage licensing leads using Salesforce software
    • Maintain an up to date catalogue of the OTT technology inventory
    • Manage and improve WHOI Technology descriptions as needed
    • Assist in management of other OTT databases as needed (i.e. Royalty database, Licensing database etc.)
    • Monthly metrics reporting responsibilities (disclosures, marketing leads, etc.)

    NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • As deemed necessary by supervisor

    Education & Experience

    REQUIRED:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
    • 2-5 years experience in Market Research, Technical Marketing, or Product Development.
    • Highly creative and innovative. Self-motivated & independent, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively within a small team/across departments, effective communicator, creative problem-solver, detail & deadline oriented

    DESIRED:

    • 1-3 years experience in Technology Transfer office, academic or research setting, or other relevant field.
    • Applicants should have some scientific training or exposure to research settings, be experienced in marketing technical products, have training in digital marketing, and be familiar with the organization and management of public outreach events including technology pitch competitions, public seminars and forums. 
    • Candidates must have strong project management and organizational skills
    • Experience with Salesforce CRM, FileMaker Pro, WordPress, Analytics

    Physical Requirements

    Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to near sighted vision and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, and communicate effectively to others. Other physical tasks include occasional standing/walking; however, this job is mostly sedentary in nature. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, with others, and working alone. Prolonged work hours may be required based on project needs. Physical duties are subject to change.
