  • Job Summary

    The Marine Operations Department is currently searching for a Financial Analyst to join their team. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.

     

    The Financial Analyst plays an important role in the marine operational activities of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s (WHOI) research vessels and submersibles, and reports directly to the Vice President for Marine Facilities & Operations.  This position oversees fiscal-related matters in Marine Operations such as coordinating, establishing and monitoring budgets and expenses; provides routine reporting & analytical support to marine ops management; is a liaison to the Finance & Accounting Department and oversees other financial matters and related duties for the functional groups in Marine Operations.

    Essential Functions

    • Oversees, prepares and/or assists in preparing financial and accounting activities for Marine Operations, including but not limited to: budgets, forecasts, cost estimates, charges, invoices and other documents.
    • Financial reporting including tracking, monitoring and analyzing marine operations financial data.
    • Responsible for preparing and coordinating the preparation of annual budgeting and forecasting for the Marines Operations group. This includes but is not limited to: workforce planning, revenue and expense, and capital planning.
    • Monitors Marine Operations financial accounts, and prepares regular reports of costs versus budgets, trends and variances.
    • Works closely with users of WHOI marine-related facilities such as Shipboard Scientific Services; the National Deep Submergence Facility; the Center for Ocean, Seafloor and Marine Observing Systems; and other marine activities to provide information on costs and cash flow of services for anticipated needs.
    • In collaboration with the Finance and Accounting Office, provides annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, reporting and oversight for marine operations accounts, including: invoice information, costs versus budget, trends and variances and facilitates billing procedures for scientific users of Marine Operation services.

    NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may deem necessary

    Education & Experience

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree required, in accounting or finance preferred
    • Minimum of 5- 7 years financial work experience
    • Strong accounting experience necessary with working knowledge of the federal funding agencies (NSF, ONR, NOAA, )-Federal Uniform Guidance and FAR Regulations and knowledge of the UNOLS Office preferred
    • A high degree of financial acumen, the aptitude to exercise considerable judgment and ability to take initiative is required
    • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
    • Must have ability to work independently and delegate duties, to work efficiently and effectively
    • Must possess written and organizational skills
    • Must have a strong knowledge in marine operation related matters
    • Must have strong computer technical expertise with advanced Excel skills; fluency in Word, and Power Point

    Physical Requirements

    Physical tasks include mostly sedentary with occasional standing/walking. Will be exposed to prolonged work hours as projects may require. Physical duties are subject to change.
