    The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Digital Communications Producer to join the Communications Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for benefits.


    Working under the Director of Editorial and Media Relations and in collaboration with other members of the Communications Team, the Digital Communications Producer works to produce content aimed at increasing awareness of and engagement with WHOI and educating audiences on the importance of the ocean and the work of WHOI and its value to society. This role identifies content to develop; writes web stories, newsletters, and social media posts; facilitates social media live events (e.g., FB live); and produces short podcasts, videos, photos and other content that engages and educates a wide range of audiences. The individual works to increase and nurture WHOI brand awareness and engagement by developing and promoting content across the Institution’s digital and marketing channels. The Digital Communications Producer is an integral member of the Editorial Team, writing and developing visuals for web stories, scientist spotlight, whoi.edu homepage, multimedia and other web pages, and other duties as assigned.

    Essential Functions

    • Identify, write, edit, and post a variety of content for WHOI’s website, social media channels, newsletter, and other outlets.
    • Conceive, develop and produce podcasts, short videos, slideshows, photo shoots, and other creative products highlighting WHOI’s work.
    • Nurture and grow awareness of and engagement with WHOI across its social media channels; monitor and respond to comments.
    • Stay abreast of trends and best practices in digital communications.
    • Edit written, audio, and visual content produced by Communications staff and freelancers.
    • Network with WHOI scientists, engineers, and other staff to identify stories to be featured on the web, in print, via social media, in exhibits, at events, and in other public communications or engagement venues.
    • Help identify existing WHOI content that can be repurposed for social media, video products, podcasts, and other outlets aimed at a wide variety of audiences.
    • Participate in at-sea expeditions with an outreach and engagement component, as needed.
    • Help develop digital content for Discovery Center and Visitor Center exhibits, as needed.

    Non-Essential Functions:

    • Perform other functions as deemed necessary by supervisor.
    • May be asked to work nights or weekends to staff events or live productions.


    Education & Experience


    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, digital production, science, or related field is required

    • Ability to conceive, develop, and produce digital content in a variety of formats is required
    • Demonstrated science writing and digital production skills, including identifying compelling stories, interviewing and reporting, and the ability to quickly understand complex science topics and communicate them in an easy-to-understand and engaging way to general audiences is required
    • Experience working with scientific and technical staff to produce easily digestible and engaging content 
    • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.)
    • Excellent written, verbal, and written communication skills, and strong attention to detail; familiarty with AP Style is a plus
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are essential, along with personal initiative and a demonstrated commitment to teamwork
    • Ability to work effectively in a collegial manner across all levels of the Institution, maintaining a professional demeanor
    • Adept at giving and receiving constructive criticism, and effectively managing deadlines and multiple priorities
    • Strong work ethic and willingness to work flexible hours to meet deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
    • Knowledge of or passion/interest for the ocean, the field of science and technology, and/or experience working at a not-for-profit organization is plus
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, digital editing software, and social media platforms


    Physical Requirements

    Ability to lift less than 25 lbs, and carry at least 10 lbs. Visual requirements include ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include hearing, talking, and communicating effectively with others. Other occupational requirements include working around others, working with others and working alone. Other physical tasks include occasional standing/walking,repetitive motion,and use of hands for basic grasping and manipulation. This position is mostly sedentary.
