Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Security Analyst to join the Information Systems Department. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.  We anticipate needing temporary support for at least six (6) months with the potential for an extension if needed.  


Reporting to the Security Officer, the Security Analyst is responsible for supporting the mission of the information security program at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation, coordination and management of internal and external cyber security efforts.

Essential Functions


  • Maintains and operates the Institution’s network security perimeter, including firewalls, intrusion detection and analysis systems.
  • Manages the Institution’s authentication and Identity Access Management systems and processes (Cloud/2FA/AD/LDAP). Works with IS staff to ensure compliance to policies and best practices.
  • Works with the Security Officer in the design and administration of the Institution’s central logging and SIEM systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs information security problems on computer systems, including issues arising from viruses, malware and improper system configuration.
  • Informs and trains WHOI community about information security threats and appropriate safety measures. Assists in developing and recommending policies and guidelines for secure computing practices and information protection.
  • Assists with the management and programming of the Institution’s card access lock systems.
  • Works with the Security Office to satisfy DoD security requirements by serving as the Information Systems Security Officer for restricted access projects.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education & Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or Associate's degree or equivalent plus at least 5-8 years relevant experience is required
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving computer security problems on Windows, MacOS and Linux operating systems.  
  • Experience monitoring, detecting and remediating network and Internet based security threats. 
  • Solid understanding of local and Internet networks, client/server environments and cyber security procedures. 
  • Training in NISPOM information security procedures.   Advanced training in cyber security, intrusion detection and analysis is desirable. 
  • Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. 
  • Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance at level Secret or above. 
  • Strong ability to communicate both in writing and verbally with both technical and non-technical personnel about computer and security matters.

Physical Requirements

Physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking and repetitive motion. Occupational requirements include working around others, with others, and independently. Physical duties are subject to change.
