    Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently searching for a Science Writer to join the Administration Department. This is a regular, half-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.


    The Ocean Twilight Zone (OTZ) Science Writer is an important member of the OTZ team.  The OTZ Project combines exacting science, innovative technology, and broad engagement to turn knowledge into actions that improve understanding of the planet and promote sustainability of ocean resources. The OTZ Project requires the successful integration of interdisciplinary science, technology, and engagement to explore and study the ocean’s mesopelagic realm.


    This position works closely with the OTZ Project Office, the WHOI Communications Team and the OTZ Principal Investigators. The primary areas of responsibility are related to writing periodic reports to OTZ donors and constituents, developing OTZ-related web-site and other social media content and other writing assignments prioritized by the OTZ Program Manager.  Supervised by the OTZ Program Manager, this position will work hand-in-hand with the OTZ Engagement Leadership Team and Communications Department staff in coordinating communications efforts to successfully meet OTZ engagement goals. The OTZ Science Writer provides support to the goals and initiatives as defined by the OTZ Program Manager.

    Essential Functions

    • Draft OTZ Quarterly and Annual Reports with content prepared by OTZ Principal Investigators and Project Office Staff.  The OTZ reports should be written with consistent narratives that clearly demonstrate the achievement of new knowledge gained from scientific efforts and the impact (or potential impact) of the project’s scientific endeavors on policy development, supporting United Nations sustainable development goals, better understanding of mesopelagic ecosystem services, and high seas management/conservation objectives
    • Draft short stories, blogs, OPEDS, human interest stories, stories about twilight zone organism’s life histories and behaviors, scientific accomplishments, technology highlights, etc. as prioritized by the OTZ Project Office Staff
    • Work closely with the OTZ Engagement Implementation Manager and Chief Communications Officer to align writing priorities and schedule work-flow in support of the various objectives and goals of the OTZ Engagement Plan and provide internal communications and updates between the OTZ Project Office and Advancement/Communications teams
    • Liaise directly with OTZ Principal Investigators (in coordination with the OTZ Project Office Staff) to develop stories and scientist profiles aligned with writing priorities
    • Take a leadership role in monitoring OTZ website and social media channel content, keeping OTZ website and social media channel content refreshed, and working with the OTZ Engagement Leadership Team to ensure that the OTZ website/social media channels accurately reflects the vibrancy of the OTZ project activities and accomplishments
    • Produce articles for print and online, conduct interviews with scientists, technology experts, etc., conduct reference searches and research specialist media and literature as necessary, review and amend work as recommended, produce multi-media products as required

    Education & Experience


    • Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in journalism, communications, media, or similar fields. 
    • Additional education and experience in science or engineering fields will be given consideration. 
    • Experiences in radio and print journalism, multimedia production, digital audio and video editing desired. 
    • Proficiency in Pro Tools, Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro 7, HTML, Wordpress and programming skills a plus

    • A sound understanding of standard computer programs.


    Physical Requirements

    Visual abilities to include sufficient acuity for reading activities and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively, talk and travel. Physical tasks include occasional standing/walking; Physical duties are subject to change.
