    Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Plant Supervisor to join the Facilities Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.


    Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities, the Plant Supervisor is responsible for supervising the monitoring, operating, repairing and installing of all mechanical and related facility process systems in the Institution buildings and laboratories (Quissett campus and Woods Hole village) to ensure safe and efficient continued scientific and administrative operations and maintenance.  Work to be completed in accordance with appropriate building codes and safety regulations.  The successful candidate will be highly skilled in several trades enabling the application of technical knowledge to perform most assigned tasks independent of supervision

    Essential Functions

    • Through supervision of all Plant Mechanics and HVAC Technicians, monitors the operations and maintenance of the following plant/building systems: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, waste water treatment, processed sea water, pneumatic and electric/electronic controls and lab utilities (e.g., compressed air and distilled water)
    • Manages and oversees work order process including asset preventive maintenance system
    • Assists with capital asset renewal, recommendations, and execution
    • Locates and diagnoses equipment failures, leaks and problem areas related to above systems; independently and/or with assistance, is responsible for timely corrective action
    • Coordinates plant/building maintenance and services need with other Institution personnel (e.g., Shop, Services, scientific laboratories)
    • Works collaboratively on Institution major construction and renovation projects and many recommend basic design changes and enhancements for optimal plant efficiency and service
    • Coordinates construction, renovation, and service requirements with outside contractors and technicians
    • Performs routine building checks on weekends and holidays
    • Responds to or directs subordinates to after-hour emergency calls for repairs, power outages, storm protection, and snow removal
    • Keeps necessary records, maintains up-to-date drawings and instruction manual
    • Requires minimal direction through training and/or work experience.  Unusual and unprecedented situations are reviewed with Director of Facilities


    • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may  deem necessary

    Education & Experience


    • Trade school certification(s)
    • Minimum of 10 years directly related experience with building equipment operation and maintenance, including heating equipment of 50 horsepower or larger, and refrigeration equipment of 30-ton capacity or larger
    • Demonstrated technical knowledge of building code and safety regulations related to the position
    • 2+ years of supervisory experience required
    • Must have demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment as well as commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues
    • Will be expected to qualify for required local, state, and federal licenses and certifications
    • Must have a valid driver’s license
    • Must be able to obtain a TWIC card

    Physical Requirements

    Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 lbs independently, 5 times per day; carry 10-25 lbs, 10 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include frequent or prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic/fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, stooping, and climbing ladders/stools. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, with others, and independently. Will be exposed to excessive cold, heat or humidity, dust or other irritants, grease and oils, infectious and contagious diseases, odorous chemicals or specimens, severe weather conditions, prolonged work hours, and electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards. Physical duties are subject to change.
