Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Associate to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for limited benefits.


We seek a Research Associate to assist with biochemical analyses of proteins and metals from marine and pathogenic microbes. The position will require the ability to learn new techniques and work independently. Careful laboratory technique and data management approaches are essential. Interest in the overarching scientific research goals is also expected. Experience with protein purification and liquid chromatography useful but not required. There may be opportunities for at-sea research as well.


The internal working title for this position could be either Research Associate I or Research Associate II.   The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience. 


Essential Functions

Essential Functions for Both Levels:

  • Analyzes laboratory samples to achieve stated goals
  • Exercises creativity regarding adaptations or modifications to standard research and laboratory methods
  • Participates in the preparation of scientific articles, reports, research proposals, and documentation of methods and procedures
  • May be responsible for the testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory and scientific equipment, or for the planning and preparation for research cruise
  • Contribute to data analysis and data management for research related tasks

Education & Experience


Experience Required for Both levels:


Research Associate I:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field i.e. Biochemistry, Biology, Marine Science or other related field with minimal relevant work experience is required.
  • Biochemistry and/or molecular biology experience required
  • Microbiological cultivation experience required
  • Computer programming experience (python) useful

Research Associate II:

  • Master's degree in a specifically related field such as Biochemistry, Marine Science, Biology, Molecular Biology or other related field with minimal relevant experience, 
  • Biochemistry and/or molecular biology experience required
  • Microbiological cultivation experience required
  • Computer programming experience (python) useful

Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtan a TWIC Card could be required

Physical Requirements

Physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors; use of hands for basic/fine grasping and manipulation, and repetitive motion. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.  Must be able to function in a group/lab setting as well as by one-self.
