Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a  Senior Systems Administrator to join the Information Services Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. Works as part of a team to design, implement, and support WHOI’s on-premises, Cloud and shipboard computing infrastructure, with an emphasis on Windows server and application administration, Active Directory, M365 administration, and storage and backup management.

Works closely with scientists and engineers who are leaders in their fields, advising and assisting them with their computing, storage, and backup needs. Provides high level customer service, with demonstrated ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical users.

Essential Functions

  • Design, install, configure, maintain and monitor servers, both physical and virtual, with an advanced knowledge and understanding of Windows server configurations including networking in low bandwidth, high latency environments.
  • Install, configure and monitor data storage. Should possess thorough understanding of mainstream file systems, RAID, and NAS protocols.
  • Develop and implement Disaster recovery procedures for critical systems.
  • Deploy and manage backup services for end user data, storage appliances, and servers.
  • Manage key infrastructure applications, such as Active Directory, MS SQL Server, Web services, and certificate management.
  • Assist in management of WHOI’s M365 and Cloud-based environments (Azure, AWS)
  • Work with and provide system support to scientific users, engineers, and administrative staff.
  • Keep current on new technologies as they relate to server administration and storage. Evaluate and recommend software and hardware.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent combination of skills/experience.
  • 10+ years of experience supporting a large, networked computing environment.
  • Must have experience with PowerShell, SCCM, and SCOM.
  • Experience with monitoring packages (e.g. SCOM, Nagios), version control systems (e.g. GIT), and automation/configuration orchestration (e.g. PowerShell)
  • Strong experience with managing Active Directory. Group Policy administration is highly desirable.
  • Experience with cloud computing, especially Azure. Knowledge of AWS is a plus.
  • Experience in building lights-out, highly available systems with limited remote hands support is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a distributed team is essential.
