Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Senior Education Specialist - Science Technology Center (STC) to join the Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.

 

This position is responsible for leading and implementing the logistical aspects of the education and outreach initiatives and supporting education research and the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for the newly established Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet https://ccomp-stc.org based at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. 

 

The internal working title for this position is Senior Marine Education Specialist - STC.

Essential Functions

  • Manages logistics associated with Education and Outreach initiatives, including: the development of pre-college materials, organizing outreach events, coordination of the Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), support of Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) teams, oversight of the Summer Internship and Bridge-to PhD Fellows programs, and support of graduate students and postdocs.
  • In collaboration with the Diversity Coordinator, manages the program’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, including recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups to the program’s educational opportunities.
  • Facilitates strategic partnerships with existing education resource centers that have successful frameworks for pre-college curricula and helps develop curricula with C-CoMP-related content knowledge.
  • Assists the program’s Education Research with site recruitment, testing, and implementation of above-mentioned curricula and educational experiences.
  • Develops technology-focused programs that will engage pre-college students and teachers to use ocean science data as a learning tool.
  • Works in collaboration with C-CoMP partners to identify programs with the greatest impact, and facilitates their expansion to national levels through engagement with developers such as OpenSciEd and submission to the NGSS Peer Review Panel (PRP) for science.
  • Assists with the design and facilitation of workshops associated with professional development, and the logistical aspects of theme-specific science workshops.
  • Is a member of C-CoMP leadership committee.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • PhD degree in Education/ Science education or related field with 3-5 years of experience in curriculum development and experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM or Master’s degree with 10 years of experience.
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint) experience is required. Comfortable utilizing technology to support student learning. Experience with technology-enhanced instruction and learning.

  • The ideal candidate brings connections to K12 districts and/or colleges and universities with diverse underrepresented populations, as well as diverse perspectives to our team. 

Physical Requirements

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently, 2 times per day; carry 10-25 lbs, 2 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, repetitive motion, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Will be exposed to dust or other irritants and electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards. Physical duties are subject to change.
