Postdoctoral Investigator - Physical Oceanography

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join a team of modelers and observationalists with extensive expertise in coupled air-sea-wave interactions and parameterizations. The projects aim to improve the representation of ocean and wave impacts in the ocean mixed layer, atmospheric boundary layer, and air-sea fluxes for the North Atlantic Ocean, using the SCOAR coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave model (https://hseo.whoi.edu/scoar-model). The project will also test a hierarchical representation of the ocean and wave-mediated processes in NASA’s Unified WRF (https://nuwrf.gsfc.nasa.gov)

The initial appointment will be for 1 year with a possible second-year continuation contingent on progress and funding. Qualified applicants must submit the application forms online. • Validate the WaveWatch-3 (WW3) wave model and improve wave-wind and wave-ocean coupling physics
• Analyze in situ and remotely-sensed observations of coupled boundary layer variables and directly measured air-sea fluxes,
• Refine wave-based parameterizations of near-surface vertical mixing in the ocean model (ROMS) and COARE bulk flux algorithm in the atmospheric model (WRF),
• Undertake comprehensive model validation efforts under various extratropical cyclones and stable boundary layer conditions

• Recent or near Ph.D. degree in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, or other relevant disciplines
• Strong numerical modeling and quantitative skills with prior experience with WW3, ROMS, WRF, and/or other regional coupled modeling systems (including COAWST)
• Expertise in analyzing in situ and remotely-sensed observations for air-sea fluxes, surface waves, and near-surface turbulent mixing
