Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Senior Licensed Electrician to join the Facilities department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for benefits. 

 

Working independently, the Senior Licensed Electrician performs all electrical tasks with superior ability and assists in shop activity, organization and planning where necessary. May be required to coordinate work with other trades and/or contractors to complete work.

Essential Functions

  • Designs electrical circuits for special applications (controllers, etc.) and assists in design requirements for buildings, facilities, and marine applications
  • Constructs, installs, and repairs electrical equipment and facilitates ashore and on board Institution vessels. Traces, identifies, and corrects malfunction and failures for a great variety of commercial and marine electrical circuitry. Includes but not limited to:
    • Testing of electrical circuits
    • Support testing of sprinkler systems and elevators
    • Working with electrical control systems, batteries and backup
  • Assists, as required, in design work for electrical installation and constructs required units
  • Develops material lists required for work and prepares requisition for approval
  • Works with electrical meters and tools, mechanic’s hand and power tools, drill press, power saws, sheet metal tools, heavy equipment (fork lifts, crane cars, and overhead cranes) and ship’s electrical equipment and machinery
  • Responsible for maintaining daily work records and monthly routines
  • Supports office and lab renovations

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Performs other such duties as deemed necessary by supervisor

Education & Experience

Education: High school or vocational school plus 1 year training school or apprenticeship in electrical trades
Experience: 5+ years of experience in electrical work
Certification/License: Massachusetts Electrician’s License

Effective Communication, Teamwork

 

Desired: 10+ years of experience in building and marine circuitry, experience in designing of electrical circuits, knowledge of main distribution panels, handling of fire alarm panel circuitry, and knowledge of electrical control systems and the ability to read electrical drawings. Knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations pertinent to installation of electrical cable and equipment



Special Requirements

Valid Massachusetts drivers license

Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Physical Requirements

Physical tasks for this position include but are not limited to lifting 10 - 25 lbs. 20+ times per day; lifting 25 - 50 lbs. 3+ times per day; Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking; Kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing ladders/stools, use of hands for basic grasping / manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, and reaching (above and below shoulder). Other occupational requirements include talking, working around others, and with others.  Physical duties are subject to change.
