Job Summary

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently seeking an experienced Financial Analyst in the Financial Planning & Analysis Department to support Central Services. This position will be a key participant in providing value-added financial/business information and analysis and recommendations for the Institution. The Financial Analyst position will provide routine reporting & analytical support to management and will assist with the annual budget and interim forecasts, including the budgeting system administration and maintenance.  This position has a flexible work arrangement, and can be either hybrid or remote. This is a regular, full-time position, and is eligible for benefits.

Essential Functions

Financial Planning

  • Assist with the facilitation and coordination of the annual budget process and interim forecasts
  • Provide financial support with the consolidation, reporting, analysis and presentation of the budget,  interim forecasts, and routine monitoring of actual spending
  • Assist with the development and enhancement of automated reporting and modeling tools for use with Cognos Analytics, including Planning Analytics
  • Provide support to budget and department managers on Cognos system and the overall planning processes through exceptional customer service

 Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assist with financial reporting including tracking, monitoring, and analyzing institutional financial data
  • Maintain key indicators in evaluating financial status of the Institution and provide periodic supportive analytic and interpretive reports
  • Assist with the development of new reporting, analytical and forecasting tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of decision making for the Institution
  • Assist with the development of financial models to support ad hoc requests and to identify opportunities for appropriate changes based on analysis
  • Assist with reporting and analytical support for Board Meetings, business reviews, and presentations to Management

System & Project Support

  • Assist with Cognos Analytics system support including creating and maintaining user security, dimensions, hierarchies, and cube-based reporting
  • Assist in developing/enhancing automated reporting, analytical, and forecasting tools that support the current and future needs of the Institution
  • Assist with identifying issues and providing technical solutions for users related to Cognos
  • Maintain Cognos processes & system documentation as well as end-user training materials
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness and integrity of the Cognos database
  • Assist with integration of the Cognos database into the Institution’s ERP system
  • Assist with other automation and system enhancements as needed

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting required
  • At least 3 years of financial analysis related experience, preferably in academic, research or non-profit organizations
  • Cognos TM1/Cognos Analytics experience strongly preferred 
  • Experience developing and coordinating budget and forecast processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge of broad-based financial functions in addition to financial accounting standards
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex financial information and prepare supporting data visualizations for end users
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience supporting financial application databases, including report writing and financial modeling utilizing business consolidation software
  • Detailed oriented with excellent analytical, quantitative and investigative skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to professionally correspond with all levels of staff
  • Ability to build relationships through excellent customer service when interacting with colleagues
