This is a broad posting targeting engineers with interest/experience in various aspects of sensor development.  Significant duties include designing, prototyping, testing, and characterizing various sensor systems on the lab bench, and subsequently deploying and validating them at sea.  Familiarity with optics or optical sensing is beneficial but not essential.  A desire to propose and pursue novel ideas and technologies is encouraged.  This is a 1 year assignment and is a regular, full-time position.    Job Level  This is an entry to mid career level position designed to encourage the connection and application of academic training to results-oriented projects in support of scientific and research activities.  Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Motta Lab in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.  The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension, contingent on additional funding and performance.  The ideal candidate would be able to start July 1, 2024.   We are looking for a Research Assistant to assist with laboratory daily activities and potential fieldwork in the Amazon Rainforest. The work involves the analysis and preparation of pelagic zooplankton samples for bulk mercury stable isotopes, phytoplankton experiments, and the development of compound-specific mercury isotopes. There is also the possibility for fieldwork in the Amazon Rainforest in the fall of 2024 or early spring of 2025, during which we will collect samples to assess mercury cycling and exposure to native populations. The Research Assistant must be hardworking, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with little supervision.   The Research Assistant will work with and trained by Motta. The Physical Oceanography Department is currently searching for an ocean Research Assisant II - Ocean Observation Analyst to join their team. POSITION DESCRIPTION Applications are invited for a postdoctoral investigator to engage in research that focuses on the marine ciliate Mesodinium rubrum, in addition to other Mesodinium spp. The postdoc will work on an NSF MCB funded project to study the evolution of acquired phototrophy by organelle sequestration in Mesodinium ciliates in the Johnson Lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA (USA). The main activity that the postdoc investigator will engage in is to understand protein trafficking of de novo expressed proteins from the stolen cryptophyte nucleus of M. rubrum, to sequestered organelle complexes. The postdoc will develop and use immunolocalization and spatial proteomics approaches. As part of this project the hired postdoc will be expected to travel for training in spatial proteomics to University of Cambridge, Cambridge (UK), for 3 months. This position will also involve analysis of proteomic and transcriptomic data. The postdoc will be expected to perform routine culturing of ciliates and various cryptophyte algae, physiological measurements, and analyzing samples using microscopy and flow cytometry. The appointee will be based in the laboratory of Dr. Matt Johnson (WHOI) and will be expected to participate in regular project zoom meetings with project Co-PI Dr. Holly Moeller (University of California, Santa Barbara), and other collaborators. The postdoc will also be expected to travel to scientific meetings to present their findings. Research Associate III – Physical oceanography and air-sea interaction The position involves: (i) Making measurements of the upper ocean and atmosphere to assess air-sea exchange of heat and momentum, atmospheric structure, clouds, radiative effects, and ocean-atmosphere interaction, (ii) analysis of measurements, satellite, and reanalysis data sets, (iii) modeling, and (iv) dissemination of findings.  Research offers scope to explore ocean submesoscale dynamics, boundary layers, internal waves, and requires participation in fieldwork. Knowledge of physical oceanography and atmospheric dynamics is desired. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. The postdoctoral investigator will focus on fundamental research related to Arctic coastal groundwater dynamics in a changing climate. This includes, but is not limited to, using numerical models, machine learning, and/or remote sensing to investigate Arctic coastal groundwater-surface exchange, saltwater intrusion, and permafrost thaw. Specific examples include investigating drivers of saltwater intrusion into Arctic coastal tundra or evaluating salinization effects on subsurface thermal regimes and permafrost characteristics. The position will involve joining a collaborative team of researchers who are using multifaceted approaches to study marine planktonic ecosystems, including how population and community dynamics are linked to environmental conditions. The research, supported by the Simons Foundation, involves opportunities for developing and applying novel approaches in plankton ecology, especially leveraging new observational strategies (instrumentation), large spatio-temporal data sets (plankton imagery and cytometry, etc.); mathematical models and data-model integration strategies; and data analysis, exploration, and synthesis methods (e.g., computer vision, machine learning, ecological network analysis, etc.). Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Embedded Systems Engineer to join the Oceanographic Systems Lab (OSL) within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department (AOPE). This is a regular full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.     OSL is a world leader in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology and operation in many complex oceanographic environments.  Military and scientific applications of AUVs are supported by OSL including biologic and physical surveys, mapping, under-ice operations, environmental anomaly detection, and filming megafauna.  OSL works with REMUS AUVs developed at WHOI and equipment designed elsewhere, expanding capabilities of the AUVs and the sensors they support.  The OSL team operates in a creative and exciting workspace from creation of ideas to deployment in the field.   OSL is recruiting qualified candidates for a position in electrical engineering in underwater robotics, communication, and navigation with a heavy emphasis on applied applications in the ocean.
