The Physical Oceanography Department is seeking a Postdoctoral Investigator. This is a fixed term, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for 1 year with an extension contingent on progress and funding.
Postdoctoral Investigator position to investigate submesoscale processes at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
The institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.
Online application forms should be submitted with a cover letter, complete curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. Applications will be reviewed upon submission.
We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent physical oceanographer for a postdoctoral position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The postdoc will work with the PI, Amala Mahadevan, and collaborators to understand the interaction of internal waves and mean flow. The candidate should have a good understanding of physical oceanography, upper ocean physics, and mesoscale and submesoscale processes, along with skills in numerical modeling and data analysis. The research undertaken will contribute to a theoretical understanding of submesoscale dynamics and inertial gravity waves, help in the interpretation of observations, and assess implications for vertical and lateral transport of tracers and buoyancy in the upper ocean. The postdoc is expected to communicate well with others, publish the findings, and make presentations at meetings.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· As deemed necessary by supervisor
· Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography
· Required technical skills include experience with numerical ocean modeling and analysis of observational data sets and familiarity with programming languages such as Fortran, Python/MatLab, and Unix Shell.
The postdoc is expected to work with others, as well as independently, and communicate fluently. This position is sedentary.
