Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Vehicle Technician to join the Facilities department. Reporting to the Manager of Distribution and Services, this position is responsible for general management of the Institution’s vehicles to provide a safe and functional vehicle fleet. Requires limited direction, thorough experience and training, and skilled in several trades required for this position. Unusual situations are reviewed with the Distribution and Services Manager or escalated to Facilities Director as needed. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for benefits.

Essential Functions

  • Manages and performs general repair and maintenance of the Institution’s vehicle fleet including large and small trucks, vans, forklifts, trailers, cranes, and other Institution owned vehicles. Duties include managing repairs and maintenance either in house or through vendors, parts inventories, and tracking and completing all inspections and registrations as required.
  • Assists with all vehicle insurance claims on regular basis, and handles claims in the absence of the Institution’s Risk Management Coordinator.
  • In conjunction with the Manager of Distribution and Services, manages the Institution’s snow removal efforts including team coordination, scheduling, contractor oversight, training, equipment preparation, and repairs.
  • Makes ongoing asset condition assessments and prepares plans for short term and long term replacements.
  • Works with mechanic’s tools, vehicles as listed above, presses, cranes, grinders, hoists, and jacks, as needed.
  • Performs other functions as deemed necessary by the Manager of Distribution and Services, including giving assistance in service areas outside the normal responsibilities.
  • Must be able to demonstrate leadership abilities.

Education & Experience

High school or equivalent or vocational school required.

3-5 years experience working in vehicle maintenance and repair, including automotive and equipment maintenance and repair.

Valid Massachusetts drivers license required. 

Ability to obtain (and maintain) CDL and and necessary state and federal licenses is required. As such, must be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination and pre-employment or random drug testing as required by 49CFR.   

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements include but not limited to lifting to 30 lbs. and carrying 10 to 25 lbs. 10 times per day. Physical requirements also include frequent prolonged standing and walking, repetitive motion, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing ladders/stools, use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, and reaching above and below the shoulders. Occupational requirements include hearing, talking, understanding verbal instructions and safety warnings, working around others, working with others, and working alone.  Ability to read, write and speak English.
