Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Staff Accountant to join the Finance and Accounting department. Reporting into the Director of Accounting, this position performs a range of accounting duties requiring a general understanding of accounting principles, experience compiling and analyzing data and report generation. Prepares work papers and other underlying documentation supporting transactions recorded in the Institution’s general ledger and financial reports. Uses internal policies and relevant external regulations to identify and provide input in recording and summarizing transactions. This is a full-time, exempt position and is eligible for benefits. 

Essential Functions

  • Balance Sheet/SOP & SOA reconciliations beginner-intermediate
  • Responsible for Pledge receivables
  • Month end reconciliation of Job Ledger to General Ledger
  • Maintenance of month end files with appropriate reconciliations & other supporting documentation
  • Preparation of journal entries as required
  • Assists in month end Financial Statement Close
  • Assists in other special projects as assigned
  • Leverages accounting software and IT systems to effectively perform duties.

Non-Essential Functions

Cross training to support the Finance and Accounting department.

Performs other duties as deemed necessary.

 

 

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.

2 years of assistance in monthly financial statements.

2-5 years hands on general ledger and accounting reconciliation work.

2-5 years of responsible, professional experience that can attest to a comprehensive knowledge of broad-based financial accounting functions.

 

Demonstrates knowledge and experience of system applications related to financial accounting and ability to learn new systems.

Intermediate – Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills & proficiency with all Microsoft Office products.

Must be highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

Exceptional ability to work collaboratively and provide customer service with internal staff and external partners.

Excellent communication and writing skills.

 

Not-for-Profit and/or public accounting experience is highly desirable.

A strong knowledge of not-for-profit accounting, including related financial accounting standards desirable.

Experience with ERP systems – Netsuite / Workday desirable.

 

Physical Requirements

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to: occasional standing and/or walking along with being mostly and continuously sedentary.  Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others.
