Postdoctoral Investigator

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension, contingent on additional funding and performance.

WHOI is seeking candidates for one postdoctoral investigator position within Dr. Collin Ward’s laboratory in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at WHOI.  The project focuses on developing, validating, and applying a light-emitting diode-based instrument for the wavelength dependence on aquatic photochemical reactions. The system is temperature controlled, has the capability to test a wide wavelength range from the deep UV to the Visible, has high sample throughput, and can accommodate a wide range of sample and reactor types. The major responsibility of the position is to contribute to the design and validation of the system by conducting a series of Qa/Qc tests across a wide range of operator conditions. Once validated, the postdoc will leverage the new technology to answer pressing questions in the discipline.

The postdoc will be the project lead, working in close collaboration with and trained by Ward. Examples of essential functions include:

• Contribute to discussions with lead Engineers on the design of the system
• Conducts Qa/Qc tests to validate the design (e.g., actinometry vs. radiometry comparisons, temperature and irradiance stability over time).
• Designing and building out versatile sample chambers to accommodation multiple sample and reactor types.
• Writing a protocol/manual for instrument use and maintenance.
• Applying the system to answer research questions about the wavelength dependence of aquatic photochemical reactions.
• Write progress reports and peer-reviewed publications.
• Present to funding agencies and at national and international scientific meetings.
• Commit to a healthy workplace climate.

• Ph.D. in Environmental or Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Oceanography, Organic Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry or a related discipline.
• Previous experience conducting aquatic photochemistry discipline is desirable.
• Experience working in both laboratory and field settings is desirable.
• Outstanding record of written and verbal communication commensurate with

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25 lbs independently, 2 times per day; carry 10-25 lbs, 2 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, repetitive motion, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others.
