Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.   We are seeking a Research Assistant to assist with lab-based measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon concentration and stable isotope measurements, particulate calcium carbonate concentration and stable isotope measurements, total alkalinity, and enzyme activities using membrane inlet mass spectrometry. Careful laboratory technique and data management approaches are essential. Interest in the overarching scientific research goals is also expected.  Experience with carbonate chemistry analyses is useful but not required. There may be opportunities for at-sea research as well.     The final level of the position will be Research Assistant II or Research Assistant III and will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a highly-motivated and enthusiastic Electrical Engineer (Robotics) to join the Oceanographic Systems Lab (OSL) within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department (AOPE). This is a regular full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.     OSL is a world leader in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology and operation in many complex oceanographic environments.  Military and scientific applications of AUVs are supported by OSL including biologic and physical surveys, mapping, under-ice operations, environmental anomaly detection, and filming megafauna.  OSL works with REMUS AUVs developed at WHOI and equipment designed elsewhere, expanding capabilities of the AUVs and the sensors they support.  The OSL team operates in a creative and exciting workspace from creation of ideas to deployment in the field.   OSL is recruiting qualified candidates for a robotics hardware engineer with a particular focus on electrical systems. This position is an Electrical Engineering role with emphasis on system and power system design.  Embedded software and microcontroller skills are a plus.  Candidates will need to be able to work broadly in computing, digital circuitry, timing, imaging, DC power, A/D systems, general communications, wiring and cabling, and other fields as needed.  The overall position tasks are split between design tasks, testing, and system integration workflows and fieldwork.    The engineer will work with a small, dynamic team to develop an unconventional AUV to demonstrate a unique mission.  The work will require taking ownership of developing the new vehicle’s electrical systems while working closely with other team members to produce a coherent final product.  In parallel, testing on existing AUVs will afford opportunities to prototype and evaluate critical decisions early in the design cycle.  Depending on the candidate’s skillset, future work will include one or more of: board-level design, microcontroller-based systems and their firmware, high-capacity battery systems, and motors and their control.  The position will also involve both local and at-sea operations to support data collection, experimentation, post-processing and analysis.   A successful candidate, with little supervision, works creatively and independently to establish objectives, meet deadlines, and complete difficult engineering assignments by demonstrating full competency in one or more engineering areas; assists substantively in planning technical aspects of new developments, as well as design, testing, and use of major system components.   The internal working title for this position could be either Engineer II or Research Engineer.  The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate’s level of education and experience.

The Manager will ensure the existence of effective internal controls over accounting transactions within the business processes.   The Manager of General Accounting works as a leader on the general accounting team and will manage 3-4 direct reports. The position will include both mechanical and systems engineering, with a focus on analysis of AUV dynamics and system interfaces, detailed design of mechanical systems, and integration of multiple electrical subsystems, sensors and power sources.  The position will require someone who can do design models concepts given requirements and produce high accuracy drawings ready for production with minimal supervision. The candidate should also be familiar with finite element analysis and ocean failure modes. This position includes participation in and leadership of at-sea operations of AUVs in support of multiple programs.  The successful candidate with have proven leadership skills necessary to coordinate the activities of a team of technicians and engineers through a design project or field cruise.  Experience with government defense related work and/or ocean vehicle / instrument work would be a strong discriminator. Hands on skill also a strong plus. Excellent writing and communication skills are required for team collaboration, publishing reports and papers, and writing proposals.  Members of this team all spend time both in the office/lab and in the field.  Field operations occur locally and at remote sites to support science, exploration, disaster response, and military research and development.  Previous missions have included oil spill response, locating black boxes and airplanes, locating shipwrecks, mapping unexplored parts of the ocean, mapping physical and biological phenomena and studying sharks and sea turtles.   Past project sponsors include NSF, NOAA, Office of Naval Research, DARPA, BSEE, Discovery Channel, NAVOCEANO, NUWC, foreign governments, philanthropic organizations, and corporations.    The internal working title for this position would be Engineer II.

The appointment is for 15 months with the possibility of an extension based on performance and availability of funding.   Research in the Cohen Lab at WHO (https://www2.whoi.edu/site/cohenlab/) focuses on climate change and its impact on coral reef ecosystems. We work across broad spatial and temporal scales, and employ a diverse toolkit of analytical techniques, using both field observations and experiments, and laboratory-based manipulation experiments. We work across disciplines and collaborate widely to draw on the hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, ecological and physiological expertise needed to address the most critical questions. We collaborate closely with conservation organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, local NGOs and governments of coral reef island nations to maximize the science-to-action potential of our research. We invest significant effort in outreach and communication to the general public, K-12, teachers, the United Nations, the US congress.   We’re seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist with expertise in tropical, shallow water coral reef ecology, coral physiology and/or genetics to contribute to two new efforts, one a traditional research project and the other a non-traditional Convergence Accelerator. The research project merges expertise in physical oceanography, hydrodynamics, coral reef ecology and coral physiology to investigate the biophysics of coral reef resilience in the central equatorial Pacific. The Convergence Accelerator is a collaboration between academic scientists, industry and conservation organizations to build the first Coral Reef Digital Twin. The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution seeks to hire up to three Research Assistants to participate in a research cruise from January to March 2022. These positions are temporary, casual, non-exempt and eligible for casual benefits.   The Research Assistants will assist at sea with preparation of seafloor geophysical instrumentation (under supervision), and will assist with other geophysical operations. The cruise, on the R/V Thompson (U. Washington) will depart San Diego on or around January 14, 2022, and sail south for about 9 days to the GOFAR transform fault (4 degrees south) and will be on station for about a month. This is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt position and is eligible for limited benefits. The initial term will be up to one year, renewable based on performance and funding availability.   The successful candidate will provide assistance with the assembly and testing of oceanographic systems and related support equipment. With direct supervision, helps an engineering team in all phases of project development related to oceanographic instrumentation and underwater vehicles.  Duties may include mechanical assembly, basic electrical assembly, organizing parts and supplies, packing and shipping, moving test equipment, helping with testing on the dock or on small boats in local waters.   Candidates should have an aptitude and interest in basic mechanical and electrical assembly from previous employment, vocational school, high-school projects or hobbies (automobile work, boat building or repair, audio-visual equipment, gaming computers, maker-space 3D printing, etc.). Documentation will be used as metadata to create departmental catalogs that will identify what the content is. Migration will be used to file the digital media content on our digital server.
