Job Summary Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Mechanical-Engineer and/or Naval Architect with training and/or experience in Naval Architecture to join the Oceanographic Systems Lab (OSL) within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department (AOPE). This is a regular full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.     OSL is a world leader in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology and operation in many complex oceanographic environments.  Military and scientific applications of AUVs are supported by OSL including biologic and physical surveys, mapping, under-ice operations, environmental anomaly detection, and imaging marine life.  OSL works with REMUS AUVs developed in OSL and equipment designed elsewhere expanding capabilities of the AUVs and the sensors employ in the ocean.    The OSL team operates in a creative and exciting workspace from development of ideas to deployment in the field within months.   The Mechanical-Engineer and/or Naval Architect will perform a wide range of design, modeling, and fabrication tasks related to AUVs and their subsystems. The position will include mechanical and systems engineering on high performance autonomous underwater vehicles, with a focus on analysis of performance, dynamics and, and detailed design of mechanical systems. This position includes participation in and leadership of at-sea operations of AUVs in support of multiple programs.  Excellent writing and communication skills are required for team collaboration, publishing reports and papers, and writing proposals.  Members of this team all spend time both in the office/lab and in the field.  They work in conjunction with frontline military platforms. Field operations occur locally and at remote sites to support science, exploration, disaster response, and military operations to do cutting edge research and development.  Previous missions have included locating black boxes and airplanes, locating shipwrecks, mapping unexplored parts of the ocean, mapping physical and biological phenomena and studying marine life.   Past project sponsors include NSF, NOAA, Office of Naval Research, DARPA, BSEE, Discovery Channel, NAVOCEANO, NUWC, foreign governments, philanthropic organizations, and corporations.    The internal working title for this position will be Senior Engineer.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Software and Robotics Engineer to join the Advanced Engineering Lab within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The position will be at the Engineer I or Engineer II level, depending on skills, education, and experience.   This position involves software engineering and development as well as fieldwork and at-sea testing at locations around the world.  This is an excellent opportunity for someone who relishes the idea of going outside while working on interesting engineering problems.  (You will probably see at least one polar bear.)   The Advanced Engineering Laboratory, located in a waterfront facility in Woods Hole, consists of engineers and technicians who work on a wide range of oceanographic systems including autonomous undersea vehicles, autonomous surface vehicles, underwater acoustics and communications, and complex sensors for physical oceanography, chemistry and biology. Within the lab, multiple groups develop cutting-edge technology for scientific and US Navy applications and take that technology from initial prototype to complete product.   Although this position is focused on software engineering and development, a breadth of engineering skills and experience across multiple fields will be helpful and is always appreciated at WHOI.   The Software and Robotics Engineer will work within an engineering team in the development, test and fielding of complex assemblies for many applications as described above, including (but certainly not limited to) robotics, instrument control, and data analysis. The work will include feature additions and maintenance within existing code bases, as well as clean-sheet designs for new projects and applications.  Several projects will involve developing applications for robotic systems using the Robot Operating System (ROS), many of which use Python.   The position will include projects that take multiple forms, including working with a team that includes other engineers and a project manager or operating independently with a scientist and a group of graduate students or post-docs. Domestic and foreign travel up to several times per year for several weeks is typical, but not always required. Time at sea on small coastal vessels or large research craft will likely be required. The successful applicant will also have a strong interest in the ocean and marine environment, ocean-related sciences, and robotics for scientific and US Navy applications.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Department of Geology and Geophysics. This is a regular, full time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.    This position will involve processing and modeling of a variety of marine and terrestrial electromagnetic data including controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) and magnetotelluric (MT) data sets. Some experience with one or both types of data is preferred, although training will be given as appropriate. The Research Assistant will work with other members of the EM research group in producing interpretable models of the data.   As a Research Assistant, the incumbent works with some supervision, employs established laboratory procedures, standard equipment, and fundamental concepts to conduct research tasks determined by field of study and scope of individual research project. The internal working title for this position will be Research Assistant I or Research Assistant II; the final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education and experience.   This will be a term appointment through to the end of August 2024. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a temporary, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of a third year extension.   Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is a promising marine carbon dioxide removal approach identified by a recent National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Investigator position in developing and executing a scaled series of ship-based ocean alkalinity enhancement field trials. The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary set of colleagues in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry and Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Departments to select appropriate deployment sites; plan the trials; and analyze and synthesize field data to characterize the alkalinity and carbon budgets of the deployed plumes. Additional opportunities include developing devices and methods for shipboard tracer and alkalinity deployment, understanding the biogeochemical response to the deployment, and synthesizing multiple shipboard data streams to contextualize the trials within the region. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for an Electrical Engineer to join the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.   The role of this position consists of working in an electronics design and manufacturing environment primarily supporting the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Electrical Engineering Laboratory and the AVAST (Autonomous Vehicle and Sensor Technology) program.  This role will also support the Applied Propagation Physics (APP) group in the Ocean Acoustics & Signals Laboratory (OASL) of the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering (AOP&E) Department.   The work for the OASL-APP group would be the next phase in the development of the 3-Dimensional Acoustic Telescope (3D-AT), upgrading the data collection and signal processing components as well as the power systems. The OOI Electrical Engineering Lab is responsible for maintaining a wide array of electronics, telemetry systems, wiring harnesses, and sub-sea cables.  The electrical hardware consists of distributed embedded systems, Linux single board computers, primary and rechargeable batteries, solar and wind generation, as well as a variety of satellite based, and line of site telemetry.   The primary role of this position is that of an Electrical Engineer, reporting to a Lead Electrical Engineer from the individual project.  Responsibilities include, with limited supervision; design and build of components, develop and implement test procedures, troubleshooting and repair of all electronic, electrical, and computer-based equipment.  Responsibilities may include the management of technicians or engineers to complete these duties.  Candidate must be familiar with a wide variety of electronics test equipment; oscilloscopes, Digital Signal Processors, Frequency generators, PCB design software and command line interfaces.  The AVAST program is an initiative providing subject matter expertise and specialized fabrication and testing spaces for multiple highly-technical projects at WHOI.   3D-AT:  https://www.whoi.edu/press-room/news-release/whoi-awarded-1-million-3d-acoustic-telescope/   The internal working title of this position could be Research Engineer or Senior Engineer.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Embedded Software Engineer to join the Scibotics Lab within the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department (AOPE). This is a regular full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits.   The Scibotics Lab at WHOI develops autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and new capabilities with innovations in hardware and software that help scientists and society better understand the ocean. We invented the SharkCam, an AUV that locates, tracks, and films marine animals like the North Atlantic white shark.  Our team strives to develop non-proprietary software that is accessible to the wider scientific community. Although our focus is on AUVs and their applications, our team works with ROVs, UAVs, biologger tags and novel sensor development such as the midwater oil sampler.    In the spring of 2023, we are opening a brand new, cutting edge robotics lab in WHOI's newest building: The David Center for Ocean Innovation.  Our team has access to cutting-edge maker space equipment, large test tanks, advanced machining, and collaborative collision spaces just to name a few.    We are seeking a highly motivated software engineer to join our team and help us develop embedded software for a series of ambitious projects: protecting the arctic from environmental damage with an AUV capable of detecting and mapping out oil spills under ice; marine megafauna following algorithms in the deep sea; benthic habitat surveys in rough terrain; obstacle avoidance in and around wind turbines; and much more.  The ideal candidate will both contribute to existing ideas and technologies as well as bring their own creative ideas to our lab.    You will help the team by:   - Developing ROS nodes to interface with various instruments such as sonars, navigation systems, and depth sensors attached to an embedded Linux computer - Designing autonomous navigation, perception, and mapping behaviors to allow the vehicle to respond to environmental stimuli like the presence of oil droplets or obstacles - Developing ROS-based interfaces for AUV data and control management - Writing and utilizing software tests, including unit tests and functional tests using tools such as Gazebo - Building visualization and user interface software that allows users to interact with the data being passed through the ROS interfaces - Integrating the vehicle’s computers with other hardware components such as GPS sensors, power management units, custom digital circuit boards, etc. - Participating in at-sea expeditions as well as local field operations and testing on large and small boats - Operating the vehicle during field deployments and testing   We value candidates who excel in multidisciplinary contexts; our ideal candidate will bring both software and electrical engineering experience, but will be prepared to step out of their comfort zone to contribute wherever challenges arise.   A successful candidate, with little supervision, works creatively and independently to establish objectives, meet deadlines, and complete difficult engineering assignments by demonstrating full competency in one or more engineering areas; assists substantively in planning technical aspects of new developments, as well as design, testing, and use of major system components. Join our team studying the paleoclimate and marine geochemistry! Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.   This position is available for a period of up to two years from date of hire, with funding available through December 2025.  Desired approximate start date is March, 1 2023 or sooner.   We are seeking a scientifically curious, reliable, and detail-oriented individual to assist with a variety of lab- and field-related activities in the Hines and Dunlea labs. Our labs perform cutting-edge research on long-term climate change and how it relates to the ocean over major climate transitions.   The individual will assist with general research needs and activities. Responsibilities for prepping samples (fossil deep-sea corals, foraminifera, seawater, porewaters, and marine sediment from around the world) for analysis would include acid-cleaning labware; high precision weighing; pipetting; acid digestions; flux fusion digestions; and elemental separation for isotopic analysis. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently searching for a full-time, exempt,  Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Program, summarized at oceanobservatories.org.  The OOI is an NSF Large Facility with a planned thirty-year life, delivering multi-disciplinary oceanographic data from five instrumented ocean arrays.  This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. May include opportunities for optional time at sea; not required. The initial appointment will be for two years with possible extension(s) contingent on performance and funding.    OOI Data Science Initiative Post-Doc The OOI Program is seeking applications for a post-doc to develop and implement the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) of OOI Data.  We are looking for researchers whose interests are in data science and strategies and methodologies for data mining to support wide-ranging research.  Successful applicant interests are expected to relate to some/all of the following themes: - Application and use of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) for data retrieval and citation. - Automated Data Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC). - Data Statistics and Metrics. - Data Visualization. - Data Analysis tools such as: - Computational on the scale of R, Python or Matlab. - Understanding of data file structures such as netCDF or Zarr. - Jupyter Notebook and GitHub. - Author guides and approaches that communicate the above themes.
